Ayurveda 101

AVEDA’s products are rooted in nature, being mostly derived from plant essences and organic products. As a company its focus is on environmental conservation and integrative, alternative medicine. Many of its services are combined with rituals that help promote balance in your life and you will see such rituals unified with product and service offerings.

A big part of what sets AVEDA apart is its relationship with Ayurvedic practices. Considered one of the longest practiced natural systems of medicine, Ayurveda originated in India 5,000 years ago. It’s a form of alternative medicine that focuses on the universal interconnectedness of the body’s constitution. Treatment touches upon internal purification through diet, herbal remedies, massage therapy, yoga, and meditation; among other things.

Literally translating to Life Knowledge, (Ayur = life and Veda = knowledge), Ayurvedic medicine believes that human beings are part of nature and are made-up of three fundamental energies; Wind, Fire and Earth. These primary forces create the characteristics of our mind and body and our lifestyles are what help keep  them in balance – or out of balance.

We share this brief overview of Ayurvedic medicine with you because so much of what we offer at the salon stems from this system.

We’re gearing up to completely revamp our skin care offerings from our retail to our facial services and much of it will put an emphasis on the three fundamental energies from above. We’ll be able to customize skin care rituals based on whether you’re a Wind, Fire or Earth. If you’re not sure, here’s a quick rundown:

Wind: if you tend to lean toward this energy, you’re most likely light, enthusiastic, energetic, and changeable.

Fire: for those that see themselves as intense, intelligent, and goal-oriented, these characteristics will come out in many aspects of your health.

Earth: when you’re dominant in this energy, you tend to be easy-going, methodical, and nurturing.

With a customized facial treatment or added value service, we will be more focused on determining which energy you most align with and how we can treat any skin triggers that arise from them.
